BURLINGTON

The Burlington Police Department has identified Crystal Newman, 33, as the woman found dead, last Thursday, in the home at 800 S. 8th Street in Burlington.

Authorities say Newman had a gunshot wound and there was a firearm/ammunition at the scene, but they have not determined a cause of death.

The children living at the residence were not harmed.

FORT MADISON

Fort Madison residents have an opportunity to weigh in on the future of city government.

A special workshop will be held Thursday, Aug. 16 at 6:00 P.M. at city hall to discuss a possible change in the current structure.

City Manager Byron Smith says the city council is looking into giving the mayor the authority to vote on issues that come before the panel.

It would take a vote of the people, though, to change the current governmental structure.

WEST BURLINGTON

Construction is scheduled to get underway Monday on a 40,000 square foot expansion of Great River Health System’s Center for Rehab and Clinics in West Burlington.

The new rehabilitation and fitness area will feature an elevated walking track, a climbing wall and an expanded exercise area.

Construction should be completed by September 2013.

DES MOINES

A Lee County teenager has been recognized by the state for helping to save a family members’ life last summer.

Jonathan McMichael’s aunt was attacked at her home on July 31, 2011.

McMichael, 14, of Wever, IA saw the attack and was able to get in between his aunt and her attacker, allowing her to get away before law enforcement arrived.

He received the Governor’s Outstanding Service Ward in Des Moines last week.
