LEWIS COUNTY, MO

Two southern Illinois men are dead following a plane crash between Canton and LaGrange on Wednesday night.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office says John Johnson, 74, of Carbondale and Carl Maiden, 47, of DuQuoin were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say the two men were flying to an antique air show in Iowa.

They say the crash site was discovered around 8:00 P.M., though there is reason to believe the crash occurred several hours earlier.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are in Lewis County investigating the crash.

MONTROSE, IA

The Lee County Board of Supervisors has pledged $2,000/year to the Southeast Iowa Regional Economic and Port Authority.

Vice Chairman Jim Hankes says the authority will use the money to hire the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission to handle administrative duties.

The contribution is expected to be reviewed in five years, if not sooner.

Keokuk has pledged the same amount of money while Fort Madison is expected to consider a similar request during its September 4 meeting.

BURLINGTON, IA

The Burlington School Board has agreed to rename the former James Madison Middle School as the James Madison Education Center.

The new name is designed to reflect the multiple uses of the building.

It is being used, this year, as a technology center, a bakery and an alternative high school.

QUINCY, IL

President Jim Mentesti is retiring after 27 years with the Great River Economic Development Foundation.

He says he is proud of the progress and results achieved during his tenure.

Phil Conover will serve as interim president until a new president is named.  He is a former Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
