The Burlington Department, Monday afternoon, identified Marquis Jones, 27, of Burlington as the man who was shot and killed by a Burlington Police Officer during a traffic stop Sunday afternoon. The department had withheld Jones’ name pending the notification of his family.
The department said in a prepared statement Sunday afternoon that officers initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle driven by Jones at 1:52 p.m. at S. 9th and Vine Streets. Jones was the only person in the vehicle.
“Officers made contact with the driver of the vehicle near the 600 block of Maple Street,” according to the release. That location is about three blocks from the site of the initial traffic stop.
“Preliminary findings indicate one officer discharged his service weapon,” said the department. “A handgun was recovered at the scene. The male driver sustained a gunshot injury and was transported to Great River Medical Center by ambulance. After arrival at GRMC, the individual was pronounced deceased.”
The Burlington Police Department did not provide the reason for the initial stop, how many shots were fired, and how the officers and Jones ended up a few blocks away from the initial stop.
It said it will not release any additional information until after an autopsy of Jones is completed and investigators have a chance to interview the police officers involved. The two officers are on paid administrative leave.
Their identities have not been made public.
