Burlington Police Release Video from Fatal Shooting

The Burlington Police Department has released a small piece of video from the body camera of a police officer who shot and killed a woman in January.

Officer Jesse Hill responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 100-block of S. Garfield on Jan. 6.

The 12-second video begins with Hill running towards a man and a woman in an altercation on the sidewalk.  The man is holding a small child at the time.

Hill yelled, "Hey, hey, hey, stop it."  Autumn Steele responded, "He's got my child."  The "he" she is referring to is her husband, Gabriel.

Immediately after that exchange, you can hear a dog growling and Officer Hill yelling, "Get your dog."

About one second later, two shots were fired.

The angle of the video changed just before the shots were fired.  Investigators said Hill was falling backwards, which is evident in the video by a view of the sky and some power lines.

One of the bullets fired by Hill struck and killed Autumn Steele.  The other stuck the dog, which investigators say bit Hill.

Steele's husband can be heard at the end of the video asking his wife, "He shot you?"

The Iowa Department of Public Safety said this is the only portion of the video that will be made public.  It did so following requests from news outlets.

Hill will not face criminal charges for the shooting.

Des Moines County Attorney Amy Beavers said last month that his actions were reasonable, adding that it was a tragic accident.
