Denmark School Facing Demolition

The Fort Madison School District will soon have to decide what to do with one of its former schools.

The district no longer needs Denmark Elementary or the former Fort Madison Middle School along 18th Street with the completion of its new school near Bluff Road.

Superintendent Ken Marang said bids are now being accepted for the former middle school, but there has not been a lot of interest shown in the Denmark school.

He said the building has sat vacant for months.

“My guess is it will not stay like it is for too awful long,” said Marang.  “Buildings get in a real state of disrepair when they are just standing there and no one is using them.”

Marang said the Fort Madison School Board will have to consider demolition if someone does not come forward with a solid offer to acquire the building.

He says asbestos removal has been completed, which means the district can reduce the heat in the building to save money for the time being.

Denmark is an unincorporated community about nine-miles north of Fort Madison.
