Digital vs Print

The Shop Talk panelists discuss an item from the Newsosaur blog titled Why Digital Natives Don’t Like Newspapers.

Panelist Lisa Kernek pointed out the younger generation prefers to travel lighter and they don’t want to be bogged down by large piles of newspapers or assets such as stacks of CDs.

However, the preference for getting news on a smart phone or other electronic device could be considered elitist. Panelist Rich Egger pointed out many people don’t own a device or have access to the Internet.

Although it might seem more environmentally friendly to use less paper, digital technology has its drawbacks. Kernek said data centers use a lot of electricity and create a great deal of emissions. Panelist Mike Murray said electric cars also seem appealing at first – until you realize much of the electricity needed to run such a vehicle is generated by coal.
