Former Macomb City Administrator to Return

Rich Egger
Dean Torreson retired after 8 years with the city of Macomb

Macomb is turning to a familiar face to temporarily fill a key leadership role at  city hall. The city has been without a city administrator for about two weeks, and Mayor Mike Inman said former City Administrator Dean Torreson has offered to come out of retirement to fill in for a few months.

It will be a move back to Macomb for Torreson, who retired in early March after 8 years with the city. Torreson and his wife moved back to where they grew up in Spirit Lake in northwestern Iowa.

Mayor Inman said Torreson should be able to pick right up where he left off.

“It wouldn’t have done much good to bring someone in who has a significant learning issue, it really wouldn’t benefit us. Dean doesn't need any preface, he’ll be able to come in and hit the ground running,” Inman said.

The Macomb City Council still has to sign off on the temporary hire and determine salary and duration.

Inman said Torreson is willing to start mid-November and stay up to six months. He said that should give the city enough time to hire a new city administrator.

Macomb parted ways with Torreson’s successor Sue McLaughlin two weeks ago. McLaughlin stepped down after less than 8 months on the job.

The city and McLaughlin both signed confidentiality agreements making much of the details of her departure secret.

As part of her departure agreement, the city took over rent payments for McLaughlin’s apartment in Macomb. Inman said the city will offer to let Torreson stay at the apartment.
