Fort Madison Community Garden Debuts New Program

2012serviceimpact.challengepost.com

Fort Madison’s Community Garden isn’t just about fruits and vegetables, they're adding protein to the menu.

For just five dollars, you can buy your own chicken through the Fort Madison Community Garden. The non-profit group will take care of the bird while you collect fresh eggs.

Fort Madison spokesman Jimmy Wendorf says to participate, you must sign on to visit the chicken every day.

“When you say adopt a chicken, you don’t take the chicken home. We’ll have a class, you’ll learn about the chicken before you take responsibility for it, because chickens can live to be about five years old.”

The community garden has space to house about 25 chickens.

Wendorf says it’s a convenient and cost effective way to get fresh eggs.
