Investigation Continues into FM Shooting

The Fort Madison Police Department is still trying to determine why a teenager fatally shot herself early Wednesday morning.

Chief Bruce Niggemeyer says the unidentified girl, 13, was walking alone when she was approached by a member of his department.

He says the officer reported to dispatch that he was going to approach her, but as he did, she pulled out the gun and shot herself.

Niggemeyer says she died later that day after being transported from Fort Madison Community Hospital to Iowa City for treatment.

He says the officer involved seems to be doing fine.  The city is making services available to him if he chooses to accept them.

Niggemeyer says the girl's mother was notified immediately after the incident.
