The Dewey Decimal System is going the way of the Dodo Bird at the Keokuk Public Library.
Library Director Emily Rohlfs says the staff is about halfway through a complete revamp of its collection.
Books will be stored under headlines such as Travel, Food, or Mystery, as opposed to the number-based system that libraries have used for decades.
We are just trying to make things easier.
Rohlfs says she learned about the "Dewey-less" system through a library conference. She says libraries that are making the switch are seeing an increase in patronage.
Rohlfs hopes that happens at the Keokuk Public Library.
"We are just trying to make things easier," says Rohlfs. "We are hoping with this system people will be less intimidated."
Rohlfs says it took staff about six months to complete the adult non-fiction section, so she hopes to have the entire project completed by the end of 2014.
The library is also eliminating confusing abbreviations or acronyms.
For example, instead of using BOCD to represent a Book on CD, they will be called Audio Books.
