Officer-Involved Fatal Shooting in Fort Madison

The investigation continues into the fatal shooting of a Fort Madison man by a police officer over the weekend.

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations said Ryan Swearingen, 27, was shot by a member of the Fort Madison Police Department early Sunday morning.

He was pronounced dead at Fort Madison Community Hospital.

The DCI said officers initially responded to a report of a man slashing the tires of vehicles parked in an alley.

The man, later identified as Swearingen, fled the scene and entered a home in the 1500 block of Avenue E.

The DCI said when officers entered the home, they “encountered” Swearingen, who emerged from a closet carrying a knife.

The unidentified officer who shot Swearingen is currently on paid administrative leave.

An autopsy will be conducted by the State Medical Examiner.
