A Galesburg alderman is concerned about the safety of pedestrians once construction of an overpass is complete.
The city council voted to change the intersection of Kellogg and Ferris Streets from a four-way stop to a two-way stop.
After the Seminary/Kellogg overpass opens in December, only Ferris Street will have stop signs for the intersection.
Alderman Ken Goad cast the only vote against the change. He said numerous elderly people use the parking lots for a couple churches in the neighborhood.
“They don’t walk very fast. And if there’s a lot of traffic that’s not slowing down, they could very easily get hit, or come close,” Goad said.
He said the intersection has been a four-way stop for years, and is concerned the road could become a “raceway.”
He said, “If there are no stops from Main Street all the way to Fremont Street, which is about a mile, no one will ever stop.”
Public Works Director Larry Cox said the city will address safety concerns in the area with intersection crosswalks that have crossing signs and high visibility markings.
