Former Donnellson Police Chief William Sackett is due in court early next month. He was charged in May with one county of simple domestic abuse assault.
Sackett resigned the day after the incident at his home. At the time, Lee County Sheriff Jim Sholl said Sackett's wife suffered minor injuries from broken glass but did not require hospitalization.
A no contact order against Sackett remains in place.
Abe Watkins, Van Buren County Attorney, is handling the case against Sackett. He said contrary to several published reports, the charge against Sackett has not been dropped.
Instead, Watkins said a new charge he filed in July -- serious domestic abuse assault -- was dropped earlier this month. He said he could not elaborate as to why he filed the new charge and why he later dismissed it.
Sackett's trial is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2 at the South Lee County Courthouse in Keokuk.
The incident left Donnellson without a police chief so the Lee County Sheriff's Office is overseeing the community's reserve officers.
