Only about 10% of registered voters cast ballots in Warren County for Tuesday’s election. The highest turnout in west central Illinois was 29% in Hancock County.
That’s where voters in two school districts, Warsaw and Hamilton, approved tax hikes to benefit local education.
In McDonough County voter turnout was right around 19%. County Clerk Gretchen DeJaynes said that was lower than normal. She chalked it up to a lack of contested races.
“Other than the sales tax question, countywide we had one contested fire district race and the contested alderman race in the city of Macomb and a junior college contested race,” said DeJaynes.
That sales tax referendum to benefit county roads did passin McDonough County with support from 70% of those who voted.
DeJaynes said early voting turnout has been climbing over the past few years, but that trend did not continue for this election.
Races across the region mostly involved school board and city council candidates. Cass County had a voter turnout of 16%, Fulton County had about 10% and Knox County came in right around 17% .
