Warsaw Expands Sunday Alcohol Sales

Customers no longer have to wait until 12:00 P.M. on a Sunday to buy alcohol in Warsaw.

The city council voted 3-2 Wednesday night to allow sales to begin at 7:00 A.M. starting March 2.  Alderman Mike Heisler abstained from the vote.

Mayor Tiffany Murphy says a new restaurant asked for the change because it wanted to serve alcohol during breakfast hours on Sundays.

The hours will not change for any other day of the week.

ELECTRIC RATES

Meanwhile, the city is planning to pay more for electricity in the coming year.

The city’s energy consultant told the city council, Wednesday night, that he anticipates a sharp increase in rates because of the rough winter.

Kent Anderson with Anderson Consultants in Quincy, Il says Warsaw’s kilowatt/hour rate could jump from 4 cents to nearly 5 cents after April 1.

In response, the city council set the maximum kilowatt/hour rate it would accept in a new deal at 4.75 cents.

Anderson says he will use that rate to secure a new contract for the city.

Mayor Murphy says even though the rate will likely increase, seeking bids remains Warsaw’s best option.

"In the past, (Anderson Consultants) has shown us savings," says Murphy, "even including their fee.  We have been able to save thousands of dollars."

Warsaw is currently receiving its electricity from Constellation NewEnergy.  It would normally receive service from Ameren Illinois.
