The Board of Education approved the purchase of an eight-acre site on the south edge of the high school campus.  The district will pay $160,000 to acquire the land from Maple Avenue Christian Church.  The board also agreed to have the district buy the adjoining Youth for Christ house on Maple Avenue for $78,000 plus the cost of demolition.

The Macomb School District, the city of Macomb, McDonough District Hospital, and the YMCA of McDonough County have talked for several years about building a combination middle school and community center, a project called Community First.  It now looks like the school district is ready to move ahead on construction of a middle school with or without the partners.

The concept of the Community First project in Macomb became public a couple years ago. The partners believe they’re now close to deciding whether that concept will become a reality.

The superintendent of the Macomb School District told Tri States Public Radio that a new middle school will be built with or without the Community First project.

Representatives from the Macomb School District, the city, McDonough District Hospital, and the YMCA are still studying whether it's feasible to build a new middle school and community center.

The collaboration created to determine the feasibility of building a new middle school and community center in Macomb has lost one of its partners. Park Board President John Hemingway said the park district will no longer be involved in the project.
