The Galesburg Civic Art Center is pleased to host an exhibition featuring the work of Ellen McDowell, a Galesburg area native, and Lori Reed, a Peoria, Illinois artist. “Moments of Joy” will be on display in the Joanne Goudie Gallery, November 13 through December 23. Due to current conditions, we are unable to safely gather together for an opening reception, but please visit the gallery Tuesday – Friday 10:30-4:30pm, Saturday 10:30-3:00pm. Admission is FREE.
“The Art Center is thrilled to host both Lori Reed and Ellen McDowell’s work together in this exhibition,” says Tuesday Cetin, Executive Director of the Galesburg Civic Art Center, “both artists find ‘Moments of Joy’ but approach the medium of photography in very different ways.”
Lori Reed is an area artist that has been featured in several juried exhibitions, as well as group and solo exhibitions, regionally and nationally, with gallery representation through Plum Bottom Gallery, Egg Harbor, Wisconsin.
“I am moving from photographic documentation of a place at a particular time, to an impression of a place that is timeless; the artwork (that builds a scene from the image and combined handmade and vintage papers) becomes more like a memory or a feeling of the space,” says Lori Reed.
Ellen McDowell is an area photo artist whose “wanderings…by ellen” have been featured in the Galesburg Register-Mail, including “Porch Portraits…by ellen”, at Walnut Grove Farm, and at the Galesburg Civic Art Center.
“It all started with a walk down my country road and then ‘Wanderings…’ began to unfold,” says Ellen McDowell, “my photography is all from my phone, it is my paint brush, canvas, and clay. “I just wander and let the moments of joy happen.” Ellen McDowell will also have additional work and greeting cards at the Art Center’s Merry Market on November 14. The Merry Market features a different local artist each Saturday through December 19, 10:30-3pm.
Lori Reed and Ellen McDowell have collaborated recently for the Big Picture Initiative, with Reed using one of McDowell’s photos for a base for her mixed media landscape “Field Notes,” a large-scale mural featured in the Washington Street Mural Gallery in Peoria. Many of Reed’s works featured in this exhibition have used McDowell’s photos as a base, and in a few cases you will see both McDowell’s photo inspiration and Reed’s impression of the “moment.”
They will collaborate again next week for a Photography Inspired Collage Workshop via Zoom, on November 19, 6pm. Register early for login credentials and instructions to pick up your workshop activity kit. $20 per activity kit/$15 senior and student rate.
In the Blick Gallery, Adam Ray, a Galesburg artist, has an exhibition of his work on display November 13 – December 5. The Blick Gallery is open to emerging and local artists on a first come first serve basis. Contact the Art Center for information about scheduling.
