WEST BURLINGTON, IA
West Burlington residents can now better protect themselves from a disaster that is all too familiar to this region.
The city joined the more than 600 communities in Iowa participating in the National Flood Insurance Program a couple weeks ago.
City Manager Dan Gifford says there is some farmland next to a stream that is considered at risk of flooding within the city, which could hamper future development.
The National Flood Insurance Program says everyone should consider flood insurance because everyone lives in some degree of a flood zone.
LEE COUNTY, IA
The Lee County Board of Supervisors says it remains concerned about the future of Keokuk Area Hospital, but it wants to hold off on committing money to its future for the time being.
The board has delayed a vote on a letter of support for the hospital that would have included a financial commitment of up to $100,000.
Chairperson Janet Fife-LaFrenz says the board does not want to get in the way of efforts to secure state and federal funding for the financially-strapped hospital.
CANTON, MO
Culver-Stockton College is being recognized by the Corporation for National and Community Service.
The Canton, MO-based college has been included in the organization’s 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction.
CSC’s recognition is based on events like Extreme Dome Makeover and several collection drives for area food pantries and for Toys For Tots.
KEOKUK, IA
City employees in Keokuk have filled in the open basement of the former Green Tambourine building, which collapsed in July 2009, and removed the temporary fence.
Efforts to showcase the brick arches located inside the basement did not gain enough support to proceed. A push to fill the hole with a material that would allow the arches to be preserved was also unsuccessful.
An out-of-town owner maintains control of the property, but Mayor Tom Marion says the city has placed a $50,000 lien on 528 Main Street.
