Autopsy Results Pending from Burlington Shooting

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) needs a little more information before it can release the results of its investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting in Burlington this month.

Police officers responded to a domestic call at a home in the 100-block of S. Garfield Ave. the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 6.  The DCI said, while at the scene, Officer Jesse Hill fired two shots with his gun, striking Autumn Steele, 34, once in the torso.

Hill was treated at Great River Medical Center for at least one dog bite.  He has been with the department for less than two years.

The DCI said the autopsy results on Steele have yet to be released, along with an analysis of several pieces of evidence by the DCI crime lab.  Once those are complete, the DCI will hand over its findings to the Des Moines County Attorney's Office for possible action.

The agency said it's completed interviews with all witnesses, including Officer Hill and Steele's husband, and reviewed all audio and video recordings of the incident.
