Body Found in Burlington House Fire

The Burlington Fire Department is still investigating a fatal house fire that occurred in the 1200 block of S. 4th Street early Tuesday morning. The department said it will release the name of the victim upon notification of next of kin and the completion of an autopsy.

The fire was called in by a newspaper deliver person at about 4:10 a.m.

Fire Marshall Mark Crooks said firefighters arrived about four minutes later to find the two-story home fully engulfed. He said it took about six hours to extinguish the fire.

Crooks said during that time, it was determined that the only person who lived in the building had not been accounted for. He said the home was too unstable to enter, so firefighters had to wait before going inside.

The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office is involved in the investigation.

No other injuries were reported.
