Burlington Schools Name Finalists

The Burlington School Board has narrowed its search for a new superintendent to two people.

The finalists are Patrick Coen and Dr. Patrick Sweeney.

Coen is currently the superintendent of the Winfield-Mt. Union School District in nearby Henry County.   He previously served as Elementary, Middle and High School Principal in the Mount Pleasant School District.

Coen holds an Education Specialist degree from Drake University.

Sweeney is the Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Support for the Paradise Valley Unified School District in Phoenix, Az.  The district serves more than 32,500 students.

Sweeney has previous administrative experience in several Arizona school districts.  He holds a Doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision from Arizona State University.

Both men were born in Iowa, Sweeney in Dubuque and Coen in Burlington.

They will spend Friday meeting with various focus groups before participating in public forums at City Hall.  Sweeney's will begin at 6:15 p.m. while Coen will take the stage at 7:15 p.m.

The Burlington School Board has scheduled a special meeting for 8:30 p.m.  It could name the district’s next superintendent at that time.
