Illinois 18th Congressional District Democratic candidate Mark Haasis is ending his campaign.

In a Facebook post, Haasis said some medical issues have come up that will "take him off the battlefield for too long."

He said he will refund campaign donations.

Haasis is a retired United Auto Workers national organizer.

This leaves incumbent Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Peoria) effectively unopposed in the November 2020 general election for the conservative Central Illinois district.

In a statement, LaHood said his thoughts and prayers are with Hassis and his wife, Sandra.

"I respect his decision to withdraw from the 2020 campaign and instead put his family and health first. We may disagree philosophically on the solutions to problems, but I have no doubt that Mark had good motives for deciding to run and that we agree on the need to serve the people of our district to the best of our abilities," he said.
