Company Considering Expansion into Burlington

A business that already has ties to southeast Iowa is considering whether to expand its presence in the region. The Greater Burlington Partnership (GBP) announced Tuesday afternoon that it is working with California-based Silgan Containers Manufacturing Corporation, which produces metal food packaging.

Silgan Containers has a manufacturing facility in Fort Madison and is considering a $100 million investment in Burlington.

The proposed project would include the construction of a 412,000 square foot building on a 35-acre plot in the Flint Ridge Business Park.

The facility could have up to 120 full-time jobs.

David Toyer, GBP Director of Economic Development, said the organization is excited about the project.

"Although there are several more steps in the process before this is final, we are encouraged by the potential for this investment," Toyer said.

Some of the next steps involve the Burlington City Council, which has scheduled a special meeting for Thursday, Feb. 12 to consider local and state incentives.

The local incentives could include waiving building fees and connection charges as well as providing tax relief.

Silgan Containers said in a news release that the expansion would not affect employment at its other Iowa locations including Fort Madison.
