Veterans, past and current park board members, and others took part in the Veteran's Park dedication ceremony in Macomb.
“When you look at the young kids playing out here on any afternoon, that's what people served for. To provide that opportunity,” said Park Board President John Hemingway, who is a veteran.
During the ceremony, McDonough County American Legion Post 6 and Macomb VFW Post 1921 presented an American flag to Park District Executive Director Ray Peterson, who oversaw acquisition and development of the 80-acre site.
The ceremony concluded with local boy scouts raising the flag over the park's entrance followed by the playing of the Star Spangled Banner.
Afterward, Roger Oliver, past commander of American Legion Post 6, said veterans don't want to be called heroes. He said they willingly served for their country to protect justice and freedom.
“But to have this dedicated to us ... is a great honor for all McDonough County veterans. It's wonderful to be part of it,” Oliver said.
Veteran's Park offers soccer fields, softball diamonds, and a walking trail. Only a portion of the park has been completed thus far. The park district has plans ready for development of the rest of it.
