Des Moines County Conservation Adding Land

tspr.org

The Des Moines County Conservation Department hopes its newest addition will provide more recreational opportunities for residents.

The department has been working for many years to obtain nearly 250 acres of land north of Burlington.

Director Chris Lee said a donation of $20,000 from Pheasants Forever put it over the top.

"We're hoping to close on the property in the fall," Lee said.  "We have all the money secured, as soon as all the paperwork is completed, the I's are dotted and T's are crossed, we will close on that property."

Lee said a portion of the land will be transformed into hiking and biking trails to connect Burlington to the county-owned Big Hollow Recreation area.

He says that project should be completed within 3-5 years.

The property is also primed for hunting, canoeing, and ecotourism.

Lee said it could even be home to a nature center down the road.
