The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) reported Wednesday that the suspect in the robbery of a Fort Madison bank was shot and killed by officers as he tried to escape.
Local law enforcement was alerted of the robbery at Fort Madison Bank & Trust at 1206 48th Street around 10:11 a.m. Wednesday. Police officers from Fort Madison and Lee County were on the scene roughly a minute later.
The DCI said the suspect, who has not been identified, exited the bank with an undetermined amount of cash. The agency said police officers spotted him as he was running away from the bank.
"As they approached the suspect, he fired multiple rounds in the direction of the officers, striking a patrol squad. Officers returned fire and one round struck the suspect in the torso. He was transported to the Fort Madison Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead," according to a news release from the DCI.
The DCI said the responding officers were not injured.
The bank issued the following statement on its Facebook page:
"We are blessed to report all our employees from the River Hills branch are safe and doing well. We are grateful for your kind words and thoughts. Special thanks to the Fort Madison Police Department, Lee County Sheriff's Office, and the Iowa State Patrol!"
The DCI reported that two officers from the Fort Madison Police Department have been placed on administrative leave, which is department policy when officers discharge their weapons.
The FBI is also involved in the investigation.
