Galesburg NAACP Highlights Local Candidates

T.J. Carson

Candidates for office in Knox County met with voters this week, in a forum hosted by the Galesburg NAACP.

Around 50 people attended to hear from candidates for county board, county clerk, superintendent of regional schools, and to hear about ballot issues, such as the Knox County 911 referendum.

The event was organized by the chapter’s Political Action Committee Chairman, Dwight White.

White said an event like this could help boost voter turnout.

“One thing is to bring out the candidates,” White said.  “If people know who’s running, get to meet them, get to talk to them, it makes it a little more desired to go vote for someone.”

White also said voters are also impacted more directly by office holders at the local level, compared to an elected official on a state or federal level.

“You can get your idea to the county clerk, and your alderman, and your superintendent of schools,” White said.  “So those people you see every day, and you can talk to them about your concerns.”

White said that the forum is not intended to vote one way or another, but to educate about the issues.
