The Keokuk City Council could decide what how to classify certain animals next week.
Angelica Finch would like the city to grant an exemption to city code that would allow her family pet, Bacon the miniature pot-bellied pig, to return home.
The 2-month old pig is currently living at a home outside of city limits because Finch’s property does not meet the size requirements to have a pig.
The city council’s code revision committee briefly discussed Keokuk’s animal ordinance following Thursday night’s workshop.
Its members were split on how to proceed so the committee will present two options to the full city council next week.
The first option is to leave the city code alone. It currently prohibits most animals from being within city limits if their home is less than 150’ from another property.
The second option is to basically create a pot-bellied pig permit. The permit process would be similar to that of a rescue shelter for cats or dogs.
Finch says she and her family will be at the Keokuk City Council’s next meeting, which is currently scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 4 at 5:30 P.M. at City Hall.
