Veterans in Knox County can now enroll in a free program to receive discounts at area businesses.

County Recorder Carol Hallam said her office manages the Honor Rewards program locally because she handles veterans filing for military discharge.

“Hopefully the veterans can get some use out of it,” Hallam said.

“It’s to honor them. Hopefully we will get more businesses participating and go from there.”

So far about 35 businesses have signed up to offer discounts to veterans including discounts on purchases, flat rates for services, and free items.

Participating businesses are provided with a sticker to put on the front door.

Business owners and veterans can enroll for free either in person at the Knox County Recorder’s office at the courthouse or online at HonorRewards.Com.

Registered veterans will be provided with an I.D. card that can display their photo or a picture of their service branch.

Hallam said she’s excited to offer the program to Knox County residents.

“I think that the veterans need to know that we appreciate their service,” Hallam said. “This is just a thank you to them. I think they are important part of our society and so I said yes, we will do this.”

Honor Rewards is the creation of the county’s computer vender, Fidlar Technologies, which operates the program in about a dozen Illinois counties.
