Macomb Police Thank WIU Students

Macomb Police Department

The Macomb Police Department is honoring three Western Illinois University students who tried to rescue a man at Spring Lake.

Owen Hill, Ryan Brushaber, and Matthew Demetral received the department’s “Citizens Award of Appreciation” during a brief ceremony Tuesday morning at the police department.

Roger Seatherlin, age 56, was driving near the lake on September 7 when he suffered a seizure. He drove his car into some trees, then into the lake.

The Western students pulled Seatherlin from the lake and worked to revive him before police and emergency medical personnel arrived.  Although Seatherlin died, police say the trio did everything possible to help him.

Hill and Demetral are law enforcement majors from Joliet. Brushaber is a philosophy major from Elk Grove Village.

Mayor Mike Inman, WIU President Jack Thomas, and WIU Board of Trustees Chair Cathy Early were among those who attended the ceremony.
