Photographer Discovering Macomb

Rich Egger
Anna Wagner is from Vienna, Austria but her photos focus on Macomb and the surrounding area.

The new photo exhibit at the Macomb Arts Center (the MAC) takes a look at the region through the eyes of someone from another culture.

Anna Wagner said she snapped the color photos during the many times she has visited friends in Macomb. Wagner is from Vienna, Austria but does not consider herself an outsider in Macomb.

“There is one thing I noticed when I came here. I never ever had such a nice welcome in my entire life,” said Wagner. “I know this is a different culture. But it’s my look at Macomb and I like it.”

Wagner said she takes photos every time she visits Macomb because everything is different than her home town.

“Nothing reminds me of Vienna. So I took photos, photos, photos.  And I selected 50 of them (for this show).”

Wagner said the region’s landscape is flat and gorgeous. She also said she is captivated by the sight of garden statues in front of gas stations and vacant retail stores in this area.

“You don’t see that (in Vienna). It goes together very well here but this is highly unusual for me. The background and these statues was hilarious to me so I took the photos,” Wagner said with a laugh.

An opening reception for Discovering Macomb: The Photographs of Anna Wagner will be held Friday, September 20, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display through Saturday, October 19.

The MAC said it is combining the artist reception with the welcome reception for the inaugural Macomb Senior Festival.
