Rep. Loebsack Supports W. African Travel Ban

The Congressman whose district includes southeast Iowa said the United States should limit who can enter the country to prevent the further spread of the Ebola virus.

"I put my name on that (legislation)," said Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-IA).

"I think we should exempt, of course, the military who are involved.  We should exempt the volunteers, the humanitarian folks and we should exempt the health care professionals.  But no, I put my name on that when it first came out and I think it is a good idea."

Loebsack said he supports the ban because his first job is to protect the people of Iowa's 2nd Congressional District and the United States as a whole.

"(Ebola) has reached our shores and we have got to do what we can to make sure it does not go any further," said Loebsack.

The Congressman believes things are getting under control -- no new cases were reported in the U.S. in recent days, but he said people must remain vigilant.

He said partisan fighting does not help the U.S. response, citing in particular the squabble regarding President Obama's choice of Ron Klain as "Ebola Czar."

"I don't think it does us any good to look back," said Loebsack.  "We are going to move forward on this thing and that is how I am looking at it."
