Southeast Iowa Bicycle Races Called Off

The bicycle races held in southeast Iowa each year during the Memorial Day weekend are being canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. That includes the Snake Alley Criterium in Burlington.

John Harrington of the Quad Cities Bicycle Club said the governing body for racing in the U.S. has canceled all races through the beginning of May, and local organizers believe later events will soon be called off too.

"Without sponsors giving us cash to run the race, the race would not happen. And so now is not a great time for going to small businesses and asking them for sponsorship,” Harrington said.

The canceled races are:

  • Friday May 22 & Saturday 23 – The Friday Night Fever Criterium and the Snake Alley Criterium in Burlington
  • Sunday May 24 - The Melon City Criterium in Muscatine
  • Monday May 25 - The Kwik Star Criterium in Davenport
