Wreaths Across America in Keokuk

Veterans from throughout the Tri-State region will be honored in Keokuk.

Wreaths Across America is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 15 at 11:00 A.M. at the Keokuk National Cemetery.

The ceremony got its start more than 20 years ago at Arlington National Cemetery.

Gary Folluo helped bring Wreaths Across America to Keokuk in 2006.

“It’s just something that needs to be done,” said Folluo.  “Our veterans are very near and dear to us.  They are our fathers, sons, brothers, daughters, sisters and they are a part of our community.”

Folluo says more than 300 wreaths will be delivered to Keokuk.

Seven will be designed to honor the various branches of the U.S Military while the rest will be placed on various tombstones throughout the Keokuk National Cemetery.

Folluo says donations are still being accepted to help pay for the wreaths.  He says they can be made through KSB Bank or by calling him at (319) 524-5410.

Folluo says volunteers can also call that number if they would like to help place the wreaths on the tombstones.

The local agencies involved include the American Legion Post 41, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 41, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 41 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3508.

The event in Keokuk will coordinate with ceremonies taking place in more than 750 other locations.

Folluo says it’s estimated that more than 400,000 wreaths will be placed on tombstones throughout the US.
