EHD Outbreak Affecting White-Tailed Deer Population

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has confirmed nearly 50 cases of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) in white-tailed deer so far in 2015 and more are expected in the coming months.

Spring Lake Park's site supervisor went before the Macomb City Council this week asking for changes to the park's winter offerings. Ryan Hansen of Spring Lake Management took over the property this year from the Macomb Park District.

This winter was the first time archery deer hunting was allowed at Spring Lake Park in Macomb.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will hold meeting across the state to allow the public to help shape new hunting and trapping regulations for this fall.

In the past, the DNR held meetings after new rules were announced to gauge public opinion.

Illinois is buying 410 acres of land in Pike County and plans to convert it into public hunting grounds.

Governor Pat Quinn said the acquisition is part of the purchase of four sites across the state.

“Our state does not have vast areas of wilderness like some states in the west. We have pockets of wilderness, pockets of nature. And we have to really work very hard, together, to preserve and expand those pockets,” said Quinn.

The four parcels cost the state $2.8 million dollars. The money comes from the "Illinois Jobs Now" capital construction program.

One thing the ongoing drought did not seem to affect was the number of deer in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said hunters killed nearly 181-thousand deer, only one thousand less than one year ago.
