It appears the Fort Madison School District will be in the market for a new superintendent.

The Fort Madison School Board voted Wednesday night to table a possible extension of Superintendent Erin Slater's contract. President Tim Wondra said the board needed more time to evaluate Slater's performance.

The Fort Madison School District is again trying to gain public support for the construction of a new elementary school. The district's superintendent said the vote comes down to what type of learning environment should be offered to the youngest students in the community.

The Fort Madison School District will again try to garner voter support for a bond referendum to pay for the construction of a new elementary school. This latest attempt will look slightly different than the three previous unsuccessful attempts.

The Lee County Auditor's Office has scheduled a recount of the ballots cast in the Fort Madison School District's April 3 Bond Referendum. The recount will take place at 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 23 at the Lee County Jail.

It's been several days since the polls closed for the Fort Madison School District’s $30 million bond referendum for a new school and new athletic fields, and votes are still being coming in. As it turns out, the late arrivals are making the already close results even closer.

The Fort Madison School District will hold a special election on April 3. Residents are again being asked to approve a plan to borrow $30 million to build a new elementary school and new high school baseball and softball fields.

A majority of the people who cast a ballot in the Fort Madison School District's special election on Tuesday supported the $27-million bond referendum. But it was not enough to make the project a reality.

The bond referendum received nearly 56% of the vote. 60% was needed to pass the bond referendum.

The money would have been used to build a new Pre-K - 3rd grade building to replace Lincoln and Richardson Elementaries.

The Fort Madison School Board went against the recommendation of district administrators by choosing not to eliminate several teaching positions. Superintendent Ken Marang said no one ever wants to eliminate jobs, but sometimes it has to be done.
