The head of the Fort School Board said a lengthy, private evaluation of Superintendent Erin Slater could soon be completed. But it remains to be seen when the board might consider a possible contract extension for Dr. Slater.

Two southeast Iowa school districts held special elections on Tuesday, April 2. The polls were busy in Fort Madison with more than 3,200 votes cast in the race. That was not the case in Burlington, where fewer than 700 people cast ballots, which is a turnout of less than 3.5%.


The Fort Madison School District will again try to garner voter support for a bond referendum to pay for the construction of a new elementary school. This latest attempt will look slightly different than the three previous unsuccessful attempts.

An administrator in the Fort Madison School District was punished for an incident that took place at a school event in late 2017. A portion of the video showing what occurred has now been made public following an open records request from Tri States Public Radio.

It appears students involved in the "senior prank" at Fort Madison High School one week ago will be able to participate in graduation after all. That's according to a post on the district’s Facebook page.

The President of the Fort Madison School Board is weighing in on the "senior prank" at the high school over the weekend. He said he expected better from the students involved.

The Fort Madison Police Department is providing details of what's being described as a "senior prank" at Fort Madison High School. The incident could result in criminal charges and the possiblity that about 20 FMHS students will not be allowed to participate in graduation.

A majority of voters in the Central Lee and Fort Madison School Districts supported plans during Tuesday’s special elections to borrow millions of dollars for new construction or facility improvements. But the majorities were not large enough to claim victory.

The Fort Madison School District will hold a special election on April 3. Residents are again being asked to approve a plan to borrow $30 million to build a new elementary school and new high school baseball and softball fields.

The Fort Madison School Board went against the recommendation of district administrators by choosing not to eliminate several teaching positions. Superintendent Ken Marang said no one ever wants to eliminate jobs, but sometimes it has to be done.

The field has been trimmed to two in the search for Fort Madison's new school superintendent, and the board could make its choice before the end of the week. The finalists are Chad Garber and Erin Slater.

July 30 was the final day candidates could file their nominating petitions for the Sept. 8 school board election in Iowa.  The two largest schools in the county (Fort Madison & Keokuk) have extremely crowded fields with twice as many candidates as open seats.

Ken Marang is quick to point out how much he has enjoyed his time with the Fort Madison School District, in particular the students, the teachers, the school board, and the community.  But he said it's time to look to the future, which is why he will retire as superintendent on June 30, 2016.
