A new non-profit has formed in Macomb to continue the food delivery programs that started last year during the pandemic. Good Food Collaborative (GFC) consists almost entirely of volunteers. The only paid employee is Executive Director John Curtis.

The head of Genesis Garden in Macomb said it has been a busy and transformative year for the group, which is a grassroots organization dedicated to increased awareness and elimination of poverty.

Homeless families in Macomb will have a place to turn to without the worry of having to split up. Genesis Garden just completed renovations on the house at 307 East Carroll Street and plans to welcome the first families by the end of January.

State Representative Norine Hammond (R-Macomb) fought off Democratic challenger John Curtis of Macomb 52%-48% in the mid-term elections.

Voters returned incumbents to office in the state and federal contests in west central Illinois.  Voters also decided county elections and a few local referenda.

This election is a rematch of the 2016 contest between Republican State Representative Norine Hammond (R-Macomb) and Democratic challenger John Curtis of Macomb.  Hammond won the 2016 election, 55% - 45%.  Now Curtis is making another bid for the seat.

Illinois State Representative Norine Hammond (R-Macomb) won her party's primary election this week. She'll face John Curtis of Macomb in the general election. He ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.

State Representative Norine Hammond (R-Macomb) gathered supporters outside the McDonough County Courthouse on a gray and chilly November morning.  Macomb Mayor Mike Inman stood alongside local Republican leaders including County Board Chair Scott Schwerer and Sheriff Rick VanBrooker. The crowd applauded as Hammond delivered the news they came to hear.

The contest for a legislative seat in western Illinois has the attention of a statewide watchdog group. The Illinois Campaign for Political Reform tracks political contributions in the state and has named the race for 93rd District State Representative one of the ten most contested state races in Illinois.

In Illinois House District 93, Republican Representative Norine Hammond of Macomb fought off a challenge by Democrat John Curtis of Macomb. Hammond called it a great campaign and a lot of hard work that paid off. She said her top priority going into the next term in January is to pass a balanced state budget, which she said will require a lot of negotiation and compromise.

The 93rd Illinois House District includes one public university and two community colleges.  Incumbent Representative Norine Hammond (R-Macomb) believes she's served higher education well and she's running for a fourth term. Her Democratic opponent John Curtis believes the state should be doing a better job of supporting higher education and thinks he can help reverse course on the trend of declining state aid.

Farmers are used to waking up with the rooster’s crow. But having grown up a suburban kid, John Curtis was used to a more conventional alarm clock.

This summer's combination of high temperatures and little precipitation has impacted just about every type of farmer. Nonetheless, some are finding ways to get by.

John Curtis, owner and operator of Barefoot Gardens, said he's dug a deeper well to come up with enough water for his crops. However, he's also had to contend with a problem pump.

“Sometimes I have water, sometimes I don't. When I don't, it really shows quickly,” Curtis said.

He had to conserve water until he deepened the well.
