Before Macomb High School seniors received their diplomas this month, they received a gift connected to the renowned civil rights leader the Reverend C.T. Vivian, who grew up in the community.

The Macomb School District is paying $1.5 million to settle the lawsuit filed against it by two former students. Tri States Public Radio obtained a copy of the settlement agreement through the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).  

The attorney who represented the plaintiffs in the lawsuit against the Macomb School District disputes an assertion made by school Superintendent Patrick Twomey.

The Macomb Board of Education has approved an out-of-court settlement in the federal lawsuit against the district.

More than 80 people – many of them Macomb High School students -- braved the cold, blustery, and rainy conditions Saturday morning to demonstrate as part of the national March for Our Lives movement.  The local protest was organized by students.  They're calling for political action to end gun violence and mass shootings in schools and society.

The Macomb School District is not saying much about the federal civil lawsuit filed against it and two of its administrators.  But that’s not stopping members of the community from speaking out about it.

A judge in Rock Island will hear a civil lawsuit against the Macomb School District, its high school principal, and the high school assistant principal. Two former students are asking for a jury to award them $10 million.

Enrollment At WIU Continues To Trend Down

In the spring of 2007, nearly 9,800 undergraduate students were attending classes at Western Illinois University's Macomb campus.  Only 8,000 were enrolled this past spring. The leaders of the university are currently working on plans to bring enrollment back up.

Three school districts have agreed to form a new conference in western Illinois, but two other districts remain undecided.

KHQA reported the Macomb Junior and Senior High School went into lockdown at during the 9 o'clock hour this morning.

Watson Pleads Guilty to Official Misconduct

A former Macomb High School teacher and coach is headed to jail.

Daniel Watson has pleaded guilty to a charge of official misconduct for having inappropriate communication with a student who was 17 years old at the time. The two exchanged over 6,000 texts over a three-month period.

Watson was originally charged with one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and two counts of official misconduct. With the plea he avoids the possibility of becoming a registered sex offender.
