Severe weather ripped through Van Buren County on July 19 with two EF-1 tornadoes touching down near the county seat of Keosauqua. One of the twisters destroyed a piece of the county's history, but not before its image could be captured on canvas.

During an emergency meeting this week, the Van Buren County Board appointed Jefferson County Attorney Tim Dille as acting county attorney. It appears Dille’s appointment will be short-lived per a recent ruling by the Iowa Supreme Court.

A special election will be held Tuesday, February 6, for residents of the Harmony and Van Buren School Districts in southeast Iowa. They are being asked to decide whether the districts should reorganize into a single school district.

Abraham Watkins is no longer the County Attorney in Van Buren County. District court Judge James Drew this week ordered Watkins’ removal from office over multiple allegations of sexual harassment.
