The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees will have someone new leading its next meeting.

The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees voted 8-0 Monday to hire Dr. Guiyou Huang as the school's 12th president.

Officers on the Western Illinois University Board of Trustees serve one-year terms that run in conjunction with the school's fiscal year, which begins July 1. The same officers who served the past year were elected for another year, though the process of reappointing them demonstrated the deep divisions on the board.

Western Illinois University Board of Trustees Chairperson Polly Radosh said leaders of the school's presidential search committee made progress the first two-and-a-half months of the year. But in mid-March, the state issued stay-at-home orders and bans on large gatherings in an effort to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees (BoT) split right down the middle on whether to name Dr. Martin Abraham as the school’s next president.  Tri States Public Radio spoke with a board member from each side of the issue to get their thoughts.   

The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees deadlocked on appointing Dr. Martin Abraham as the university's 12th president. The vote came after the board held a five hour executive session Thursday night and met behind closed doors for more than an hour Friday morning.

Governor J.B. Pritzker appointed Carin Stutz and Patrick Twomey to the Western Illinois University Board of Trustees just a few weeks ago.  Stutz and Twomey filled the seats that became vacant when Pritzker withdrew his nominations of Nick Padgett and Jackie Thompson in July.

More changes are coming to Western Illinois University's Board of Trustees. Governor J.B. Pritzker has withdrawn the nominations of Nick Padgett and Jackie Thompson.

At the beginning of their June 14 meeting, Western Illinois University trustees agreed to a plan that calls for WIU President Jack Thomas to step down on June 30.  After the 7.5 hour meeting, Tri States Public Radio talked to Board of Trustees Chairperson Greg Aguilar about the deal.

Members of Western Illinois University's new Board of Trustees barely got to introduce themselves to each other before holding their first meeting.  And even though they are just getting to know each other, one of their first tasks was to elect a new chairperson.

Near the beginning of Friday's six hour Board of Trustees meeting in Macomb, Western Illinois University President Jack Thomas talked about the various steering teams and task forces he has put together to help guide the university and position it for the future. But board members felt something was missing.

Supporters of Western Illinois University traveled to Springfield Thursday to hand deliver a petition to the governor's office. The governor was out of town at the time, but he did address it and the university during a visit to Quincy.

The latest audio recordings of illegal discussions held by Western Illinois University's administration and Board of Trustees garned significant conversation during the most recent Faculty Senate meeting.

The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees held closed door meetings with the administration on June 1, 2018 and June 7, 2018. Many of the issues discussed during those meetings should have been talked about in public, as per the Illinois Open Meetings Act (OMA).

Western Illinois University's Faculty Senate is asking the university's Board of Trustees (BoT) to make public numereous closed door meeting minutes and audio recordings. The request comes after the BoT was found to have violated the Illinois Open Meetings Act (OMA).

The new school year begins August 20 at Western Illinois University -- less than two weeks from now.  But there is still no contract in place for President Jack Thomas (see editor's note below for update).
