The 911 dispatch center serving Galesburg and Knox County is getting a new home, along with renovations totaling nearly $1.8 million.
The dispatch center is more than 25 years old and in need of upgrades. It will stay in the Galesburg Public Safety Building, 150 S. Broad St. But it will move up to the top floor, in the space that used to house the county jail.
The Galesburg city council authorized the project at its regular meeting Monday. But City Manager Eric Hanson said it will be managed and funded by the Galesburg and Knox County Emergency Telephone Systems Board.
“The reason this matter is before you tonight is because the work actually occurs in our building, and therefore this agreement allows them to move forward and use the space that is currently our facility,” Hanson said.
The ETSB accepted a bid for $1.75 million from Valley Construction for the project, which include complete tear out, renovation of walls, new flooring and ceiling, new electrical, and new data wire and jacks.
The board also accepted a bid of $41,000 from Husar Abatement Ltd. for asbestos abatement.
Renovations are being covered by revenues from the telecom tax.
Hanson said the move will free up some space on the main floor of the Public Safety Building where the police department is located.
