The trial for a Granite City man charged with killing a Knox County Sheriff’s deputy will begin next week in Henry County.

Daylon K. Richardson, now 24, is accused of hitting Deputy Nicholas Weist, 34, with his vehicle on U.S. Route 150 south of Alpha on April 29, 2022.

Weist was laying spike strips in the road to stop a police chase that started in Galesburg that morning after a report of a man with a gun at a gas station. The deputy died at the scene.

Richardson is charged with murder, aggravated fleeing, improper lane usage, and being a felon in possession of a weapon. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody at the Henry County jail.

The jury trial is set to begin Monday, Oct. 23 and could last up to two weeks.

The stretch of U.S. Route 150 between Galesburg and Alpha has been renamed The Deputy Sheriff Nick Weist Memorial Highway.

Weist was a father of two and a graduate of the law enforcement program at Western Illinois University.
