Carthage Plans Water Rate Hike

Carthage, IL – Carthage aldermen will be asked to approve a five-percent hike in water rates. Mayor Jim Nightingale says expenses are increasing and the city plans some maintenance and construction work. He says the cost of water treatment chemicals has doubled in the past three years . In addition, the city plans to spend more than $100,000 to replace old water mains. It also plans to repaint the older water tower inside and out at a cost of more than $40,000. Nightingale says the city is now purchasing 60,000 gallons of water per day from Hamilton because the Carthage Lake level is low.
