Hickory Ridge Concerts kicks off the 2025 season with the bluegrass band Misspent Youth on Saturday, January the 18th at 7:00 PM at the historic Ellisville Opera House in Ellisville, IL. A band formed in the 1980’s, Misspent Youth likes to play all kinds of bluegrass, and particularly likes finding good, old songs that are not heard very often and bringing them back into the main genre once again.
The three members, Dale Ludewig (banjo), Mike Warfel (bass) and Dave "DK" Kolars (guitar) bring over 150 years of combined playing together into a tight mix of vocal harmony and musicianship, playing the music the way Bill Monroe himself would have.
DK has been a staple in the Northern Illinois bluegrass music world since the 70's and has played in countless bands over the years. He was also one of the owners of Juicy John Pinks club in downtown DeKalb in the mid-70's, and one of the founders of the Northern Illinois Bluegrass Assoc (NIBA) in 1995. Dale comes from a musical home, growing up hearing his Dad, Laverne, with his group Laverne & the Boys practicing and playing all over the Freeport/Stockton/Rockford area. Dale is best known as the maker of Ludewig mandolins & does custom builds and repair work. Dale & DK met in 1968 and they have been playing together in multiple ensembles since then. Mike is the relative newcomer to the group, only playing with Dale & DK for the past 15 yrs or so in various bands of various styles; bluegrass, country, blues and Hawaiian.
