Indiana singer-songwriter and guitarist Nick Dittmeier will perform a duo show at Ca d’Zan House Concerts in Cambridge on Thursday, October 1, bringing a sharp, story-driven blend of roots music, Americana and alt-country.

Presented by Crossroads Cultural Connections, the all-ages evening will begin with an optional potluck dinner at 6 p.m., followed by the concert at 7 p.m. Guests who would like to participate in the potluck are invited to bring a dish to share.

Based in Jeffersonville, Indiana, Dittmeier has spent more than a decade chronicling Midwestern lives through songs filled with grit, humor, empathy and a strong sense of place. His writing often focuses on working people, small towns, complicated families and the everyday stories that can easily be overlooked.

His latest release, Apparition, continues to expand that sound while keeping the focus on real people and lived experience. The album blends alt-country, roots rock and darker Americana influences with the direct storytelling that has long defined his work.

For the Cambridge performance, Dittmeier will appear in a duo format, offering audiences a stripped-down and personal version of his music that places even more emphasis on the songs, guitar work and stories behind them.

The next Environmentally Concerned Citizens meeting will be held October 1, Thursday, at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Macomb City Hall. There will be a discussion about the effects of large data collection companies. At the September meeting, elections were held, and Michelle Langjout is the new secretary, as Sara Wood has retired from serving as secretary--thank you.

More than 370 area eighth graders will embark on an immersive occupational journey during the Welcome to the Real World and Career Exploration experience from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 2 on Sandburg’s Galesburg campus.

The event, hosted by Sandburg in cooperation with the University of Illinois Extension and Regional Office of Education No. 33, inspires students’ aspirations and prepares them for the challenges and opportunities of the future while introducing them to diverse career options.

In the Career Exploration portion, students will hear from a panel of professionals in various career paths, allowing them to learn about necessary education and training as well as how these industry experts achieved success. The career panel will be moderated by Abby Thomas, director of communications and development at the Knox County Area Partnership for Economic Development.

The career panel will include the following industry experts:

Following the career panel, industry partners will have interactive demonstrations set up in the gymnasium, where students can explore career fields through hands-on activities. Participating groups include:

The Western Illinois Museum, in partnership with the Western Illinois University (WIU) School of Music, invites jazz fans to an evening of music with the jazz saxophonist Doug Stone on October 2nd.

A world-class performer and composer, Stone comes to the Museum’s Our Front Porch stage from Louisiana, where he is Professor of Jazz Saxophone at Louisiana State University.

He will perform with the HAT Trio for two sets at 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm. Doors and bar open at 4:30 pm. The audience is invited to stay for the afterparty at 7:30 pm as WIU jazz students perform.

A $5 suggested donation supports the Museum’s community programming.

 A first-call musician in New Orleans, Stone performs with groups including the John Mahoney Septet, Reid Poole’s Boppin’ Five, and the Victory Swing Orchestra, while maintaining an active national and international touring schedule. His numerous recordings span projects as a leader, co-leader, and sideman, showcasing his versatile approach to jazz and improvisation. As director of the acclaimed LSU Jazz Ensemble, he is also a sought-after clinician and composer.  

Joining Stone is the HAT Trio: WIU jazz faculty Matt Hughes (bass), George Turner (guitar), and Whitney Ashe (piano). This performance is part of the Music on Our Front Porch series, which presents world-class jazz and classical musicians in the Museum’s cozy, one-of-a-kind garage space, offering a rare chance to experience locally accomplished musicians up close. 

The Music on Our Front Porch series continues on November 6th with saxophonist Chris Merz.

Forgottonia is a musical journey through the people and places of rural Illinois, just as the last vestiges of the old “Forgottonia” slowly eroded away. The show combines storytelling and live music with images from award-winning rural photographer Tim Schroll, long known for his striking black-and-white photographs of rural Illinois. Vallillo shares the histories and backstories of these songs, which document, reflect, and validate the people, places, and characters of rural IL, reinforcing these communities’ sense of commitment and worth.
