Macomb, IL – Regional educators are skeptical of a proposal to sell or lease the Illinois State Lottery and use the proceeds for education. Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich says the idea could raise about $10 billion over a four-year period with $6 billion of that going for education. However, Cuba School Superintendent Dr. Janice Spears believes the idea is not well thought out and could burden future generations of taxpayers. In addition, she and West Prairie Interim Superintendent James Taylor both say the proposal seems to offer nothing that would change the basic problems in the way Illinois education is funded. Blagojevich has suggested spending at least $1.5 billion on school construction with other funds going to textbooks and pre-school education among other uses.
