Havana, IL – The Illinois Department of Natural Ressources is investigating the cause of a carp die-off in part of the Illinois River. Director of Natural esources Mike Conlin says the die-off is not expected to reduce numbers enough to endanger a proposed fish protein plant near Beardstown. Carp Protein Products has expressed interest in building the plant which would extract protein for the Asian food market. Conlin says even with the die-off between Havana and Starved Rock, lots of carp remain in the Illinois river. He says the die-off would have to become much worse to endanger the supply. However, he says the DNR is also somewhat happy to see the reduction in the numbers of what's considered an invasive species.
