Macomb, IL – Mcdonough County taxpayers who missed out on the homestead exemption for last year's taxes will have a second chance ... but they won't get a refund. State's Attorney James Hoyle told the county board's Law and Legal committee it could not issue either a refund or a tax credit. About 150 taxpayers filled out forms saying they should have received the homestead exemption, but didn't. The exemption can cut up to $150 from a property tax bill. Board Chairman Bob Harwick says all of the forms will be sent to the county's Board of Review. He says if the county made an error, the board can reatroacatively grant the exemption for the 2005 taxes that were paid this year. However, Hoyle warned the committee that failing to ask for the exemption, or applying late, can not be considered an error by the county. He said it's up to the homeowner to apply for any tax exemptions.
