Macomb, IL – McDonough County taxpayers who missed out on their general homestead exemption will get a second chance. Commonly called the owner-occupied exemption, it can take up to $500 off a homeowner's tax bill. About 170 people filed forms saying they should have received it but didn't. The McDonough County Board will now allow them to make their case before a special committee and be issued a refund or tax credit if they overpaid. Lee Trotter, who introduced the motion, told the board there is a systemic problem in getting the information out to those who buy homes to live in. His motion also called for an apology by the county board. No money has been earmarked for the refund cost, which could be up to about $85,000. State's Attorney James Hoyle urged caution by the committee to avoid lawsuits by taxing bodies.
